What a year members and visitors have had at Sandiway Golf Club!

For the members it has been an extended season of a fast running course, superb greens and as always magnificent views of the holes ever varying as they wind through the tree lined fairways.  For those visiting Cheshire we think that playing at Sandiway is a must for those who appreciate a challenging course superbly presented, a relaxed and friendly clubhouse, catering of a high standard and a well stocked professional's shop run by helpful and knowledgeable staff.

In addition to the numerous societies who visited, and many on a regular basis, we had the benefit of The Open being held nearby and we hope that all who joined us in that week thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We certainly enjoyed meeting them. Due to the combined efforts of all the staff the total number of society visitors increased in 2006 by approximately 20%, thus proving the benefit of all the course maintenance undertaken through the last few years, including Charlie's rabbit proof fence. At least those inside can't get out and visit their relatives now.

This year Sandiway had the honour of playing host to four major competitions starting in July with the Bigga Northern Region qualifier when 108 players participated on a glorious day. In September the Civil Service Home International Competition was held over two days.

On the first day a competitor, with a handicap of 2, carded a net 62 that included going out of bounds on the par three, 180 yards, 18th hole. On the second day another record, an albatross 2 at the uphill par five, 519 yards, 16th hole.

The month of October saw the Golf Club Secretary's Championship held with a field of 36, many of whom renewed old friendships and cemented new ones.

The season closed in October with the Golf Monthly North West Region Final with more than 30 contestants and again in glorious weather. It was a superbly organized event which delighted all who played.

Alan Taylor organized the local Macmillan Cancer Support Group charity day attractively and ably helped by Jenny Chelsea and her team who ensured that the 40 players who entered had an enjoyable and generous day.

The year 2007 has started on a high or may be a long. Assistant Professional Adam Powell had a hole in one at the 283 yard 17th hole that includes a carry over a 60 feet high oak tree 50 yards from the green. Unfortunately the bar was empty!
